Plein Air to Studio
The Artist
"Art is standing with one hand extended into the universe and one hand extended into the world, and letting ourselves be a conduit for passing energy." - Albert Einstein
I’m Tania Mackie, a contemporary mixed media and plein air artist exploring the textures, colours, and atmosphere of Scotland’s wild landscapes and seascapes. My work captures fleeting light and layered emotion — inviting a quiet sense of place and reflection.

The Scottish painter James Morrison has had a lasting influence on how I see and interpret the landscape. His ability to capture atmosphere — that subtle, almost intangible relationship between land, light, and weather — deeply resonates with my own approach to painting. Morrison’s work reminds me that landscape painting is not simply about place, but about presence: the way we feel within a landscape, and the emotional charge that the natural world holds.
I’ve always admired how Morrison’s brushwork balances precision with looseness — how he allows space for the paint to breathe, for the air and light to move across the surface. In his vast skies and shifting horizons, there’s a sense of humility before nature that I strive to bring into my own work.
Like Morrison, I’m drawn to the drama and stillness of the Scottish landscape — to weather that changes by the minute, to cloud shadows sweeping over moorland and sea. His paintings taught me the value of restraint: to suggest rather than describe, to let watercolour speak for itself, and to trust that atmosphere often says more than detail ever could..
