"Colour is a power which directly influences the soul." – Wassily Kandinksy
There’s something captivating about the moment when light meets land — when mist drifts over a hillside, or the sea blurs into the sky. My work begins in those quiet spaces where atmosphere takes centre stage. I’m drawn to the subtle shifts of tone and texture that watercolour allows — the way pigment pools, fades, and merges to suggest fleeting weather, shifting light, and the emotion of place. I also use brushes to move and mark the paper, creating interest, tone and depth. James Morrison remains a solid
For me, painting an atmospheric landscape isn’t about reproducing a scene exactly as it appears. It’s about distilling an impression — the memory of wind on water, or the glow of late afternoon on a distant ridge. I use transparent washes and layered glazes to create depth and softness, letting the unpredictability of watercolour mirror the changing moods of the natural world.
Many of my paintings start outdoors, where I sketch and gather colour studies in wild coastal places or along quiet inland lochs. Back in the studio, these impressions evolve into larger works that blend observation with imagination. The result is a body of work that celebrates the beauty of impermanence — light that fades, weather that passes, and landscapes that are always becoming something new.
